Eligibility and condition considerations
A shotgun does not have to be new or cosmetically perfect. Normal wear from responsible use may be acceptable. Each firearm is reviewed individually based on its condition, configuration, safety and potential usefulness to a participating program.
Submission does not guarantee acceptance. Firearms that are unsafe, heavily damaged, illegally configured, missing ownership information or unsuitable for clay target sports may not qualify.
Over-and-under shotguns can become meaningful hand-me-downs
Many sporting shotguns are built for long-term use. A firearm that served one shooter for years may continue helping another learn proper fundamentals, compete and become part of a team. Some owners no longer have a family member interested in receiving a shotgun; others are managing an estate or reducing a collection. When appropriate, we may also be able to preserve information about the firearm's history, previous owner, competitions or family significance and share that story with the participating organization.
How the sporting shotgun donation process works
- Tell us about the shotgun. Complete the form on this page with the firearm's make, model, gauge, condition and any known history. Clear photos help our team conduct an initial review.
- We review its suitability. We evaluate mechanical and visible condition, gauge and configuration, the intended clay target discipline, stock dimensions and adjustability, parts availability, estimated maintenance needs and potential usefulness to a team or athlete. An independent gunsmith evaluation may be requested when mechanical condition cannot be confirmed from the initial review.
- We coordinate lawful intake. If the firearm is accepted for further consideration, our licensed team explains the intake and documentation process. Do not ship or deliver a firearm until you have received instructions from our team.
- We identify an appropriate program. We work with established youth shooting organizations, coaches, ranges and community partners to identify a responsible use: supervised team use, a team equipment or loaner program, an eligible athlete selected by the organization, a lawful fundraiser benefiting a youth shooting program, or another approved shooting-sports purpose.
- All required transfer procedures are completed. Every accepted firearm is handled through the appropriate licensed process and in accordance with applicable federal, state and local requirements. Firearms will not be transferred directly to minors through this program; any final transfer or placement must be completed through a legally eligible recipient and the required documentation process.
Other ways to support youth shooting sports
A shotgun donation is not the only way to become involved. Individuals and businesses may also sponsor shotgun inspections or repairs, replacement stocks and recoil pads, protective cases, eye and ear protection, team uniforms, targets and range fees, competition entry fees, travel expenses, training and coaching, fundraising events, or youth clay shooting tournaments. Are donations tax-deductible?
